Kambuja was described as a wealthy land. Farmland was rich and a great diversity of crops were grown in the region around Angkor. The annual flooding of the Great Lake, together with the manmade irrigation system, enabled the peasant farmers to grow three to four rice crops a year, which amply fed the huge population of Angkor.
Surplus produce was sold in small markets throughout the kingdom. The products were laid out on a mat by the roadside, much as petty commerce is conducted in Cambodia today. Chinese traders were also active in Kambuja, selling lacquerware, colored silk and porcelain to the richer citizens. Small purchases were paid for with rice or cereals and larger ones with gold or silver.
